What Happens During Your Therapy Intake Session

Your first session is your initial intake, a 60-minute appointment designed to get to know you, your history, and what brought you to therapy. This is where we start building a plan tailored to your goals.

During your intake, your therapist will:

  • Ask about your background, current challenges, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy

  • Explain their therapeutic approach and answer any questions you have

  • Begin identifying which modalities, like EMDR, IFS, or somatic work, might fit your needs

  • Identify your strengths and existing resources to build upon throughout therapy

  • Work with you to set the pace and direction for your sessions going forward

There's no pressure to have everything figured out before you walk in. Our therapists meet you where you are.

Individual Therapy Sessions

Once your intake is complete, ongoing individual therapy sessions give you consistent, dedicated space to work through what's weighing on you, whether that's anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, family of origin patterns, or simply wanting to understand yourself better.

Sessions are offered in 45 and 60-minute formats, in person therapy in Mount Pleasant or virtually anywhere in South Carolina, so you can find the rhythm that works for your schedule and your healing.

Our Approach

Every intake and individual session is grounded in an integrative, client-centered model. Your therapist draws from a range of evidence-based and holistic methods, adjusting the combination to fit your history, goals, and nervous system, not the other way around.

Modalities We Use: EMDR, Somatic Therapy & More

This is what holistic therapy means at Andrea Meier LLC: caring for your mind, body, and spirit together, moving beyond symptom management into deeper healing. Your therapist may draw from any combination of the following approaches depending on what serves you best:

  • EMDR Therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories, beliefs, emotions, or physical symptoms so they become less emotionally overwhelming. EMDR is effective for trauma, anxiety, panic, grief, performance concerns, and many other experiences that become “stuck” in the nervous system.

  • Somatic Therapy: Somatic therapy recognizes that stress and trauma are often stored not only in our thoughts, but also in our bodies and nervous systems. Through increased body awareness, nervous system regulation, breathwork, and mindfulness-based techniques, somatic therapy helps you reconnect with physical sensations, release chronic patterns of tension, and develop a greater sense of safety, resilience, and emotional balance.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps you better understand and heal the different “parts” of yourself that may have developed to protect you after difficult life experiences. Rather than judging these parts, IFS fosters self-compassion, emotional healing, and greater internal harmony, helping you move beyond survival patterns and toward lasting confidence, clarity, and connection.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps identify the thoughts, beliefs, and behavioral patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, stress, and other emotional challenges. Together, you’ll learn practical strategies to challenge unhelpful thinking, develop healthier coping skills, and create lasting changes that support your emotional well-being.

  • Mindfulness-Based Practices: Mindfulness-based practices help you slow down, become more present, and respond to life’s challenges with greater intention rather than reacting automatically. Through grounding exercises, meditation, breath awareness, and nervous system regulation techniques, mindfulness supports emotional resilience, reduces stress and anxiety, and strengthens your ability to navigate difficult thoughts and emotions with greater ease.

The therapists at Andrea Meier LLC are licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) and licensed professional counselors (LPCs) with years of specialized clinical experience in trauma, anxiety, and relational healing. Each therapist brings a distinct depth of training to the modalities they use, so you're not just working with someone who has read about EMDR or somatic therapy, but someone who has practiced these approaches with care and intention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect at my first therapy intake session?
Your intake is a chance for your therapist to learn about you and for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether it's the right fit. It's a conversation, not an evaluation.

How long does an initial intake take?
Intake sessions are 60 minutes long.

Do you offer individual therapy online?
Yes. We offer virtual therapy in South Carolina, including Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel Island, Johns Island, James Island, West Ashley, and Charleston. We also offer virtual therapy in Tennessee.

How much does individual therapy cost in Charleston?
Individual therapy sessions range from $125 to $235 depending on the session length and therapist. We operate as a self-pay practice to protect your privacy and provide personalized, high-quality care without the limitations often associated with insurance. If you have out-of-network benefits, we’re happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance carrier for potential reimbursement.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?
Finding the right therapist matters. One of the advantages of working with Andrea Meier, LLC | Holistic Wellness Collective is that we’ll help match you with the therapist whose personality, experience, and clinical approach best fits your needs. If your needs change over time, our collaborative team can also help guide you toward other specialties within the practice.
